Traditional Chinese Medicine
This 2,300 year-old medicine defines diseases and conditions differently from Western medicine.
The TCM view of the body is as a whole rather than single and separate systems, and its aim is to restore natural balance to the body to both treat and prevent illness. TCM is integrated into hospitals, government programs such as the VA, research labs and medical systems here in the US.
TCM practitioners are licensed and very well-trained; they must complete nearly 4,000 hours of education in a four year program. In some states, such as California, TCM practitioners are licensed primary care providers.
Techniques
Practitioners of TCM use the following to achieve and maintain good health:
acupuncture needles
meditation/breathing
nutrition and lifestyle consultation
several massage techniques using cups and soup spoons (gua sha)
moxibustion heat therapy
herbal medicine
It is the mission of the TCM doctor to educate and train the patient on how to stay well.
What Does It Do?
In competent hands, acupuncture is considered a safe procedure with few contraindications or complications, according to the World Health Organization. Acupuncture is FDA-approved and quite well studied.
In US studies acupuncture and the therapeutic bruising seen in cupping and gua sha has been shown to :
reduce inflammation
increase circulation
relax muscle tissue
alter pain sensations
increase the body’s natural opioid production
calms the nervous system
Most importantly, TCM can address conditions that have not achieved adequate results in other treatment settings.
